Connecting Remote Access Users/Networks

This section describes how to connect the remote user in MONITOR if he/she is located outside the local company network where MONITOR's database server is installed. Normally there are then two different occurring scenarios:

  1. Single remote users that will access from a home network or in the field.
  2. Multiple remote users that will access from another company network.

The most common method in the first scenario is that a single remote user's computer connects to the company's network via a VPN-connection on the remote user's computer. The remote user runs the MONITOR-client from a remote desktop to a separate computer or terminal server in the network where the database server is located.

In the second scenario, where the company has two or more geographically separated units (separate networks), another method is used. This method is to establish a fixed VPN connection or "Point-to-Point" connection between these networks and a terminal server in the network where the database server is located. The remote user runs the MONITOR-client from a remote desktop to a terminal server.

It is also possible to distribute the MONITOR client as a "shared application" on a terminal server, in case you do not want remote users to have access to the entire remote desktop. For this you need Windows Terminal Services or another application server (e.g. Citrix) as terminal server.
