Insert Path
To insert paths under Root, select the Insert path option in the Info menu or use the Insert path button under Window functions. A dialog window opens where you, on the local computer or in another computer/file server, select a file in a folder that should represent the file path. The file path will then point to that directory. You can insert an optional number of file paths. The underlying folders will automatically be included for a file path.
In order to be able to create a file path to a directory on another computer, that particular directory must be configured as "read only".
Sharing a Directory
In order to be able to create a file path to a directory on another computer, that particular directory must be configured as "shared". An advice is to only share directories on a file server. Otherwise, you can also share directories on client computers, but this is not recommended, since the client computers are usually shut down by the user at the end of the work day.
- To share folders or directories, open the Explorer in Windows on the computer/file server.
- Go to your local hard drive and select the directory that will be "shared".
- Go to File | Properties for the selected directory. Or select Sharing and Security... when right-clicking.
- Click on the Sharing tab and select Share this folder. ((If this tab does not exist, you must first install file and printer sharing, please see your Windows documentation).
- If needed, enter an individual "Share name" for the resource (otherwise the name of the directory is entered by default). You can also enter a "Comment" regarding the sharing.
- If needed, configure a limitation regarding the number of users that can share the resource under User Limit, as well as user right limitations under the button called Permissions.... By default, new resource sharing is set to an unlimited number of users and read only permissions for all users.
- If the hard drive is partitioned for NTFS file system you will also see the Security tab. Then you can also configure additional user rights at file and directory level. By default all users are allowed to read and execute.
- Click Execute and OK to share the resource. (Once a resource has been shared, when you look at the directory using Windows Explorer, the directory symbol will show a hand holding it up to signify that it is shared).
