What is a Configuration Group?
A configuration group is a complement to a basic preparation. It is a structure that describes the alternatives and rules used to manage different product variants. A configuration group in combination with a basic preparation can manage several variants of a product. A basic preparation describes the common execution of all variants, while the configuration group describes all selection options and how these shall be managed.
In connection to e.g. order registration, calculations, quoting, etc. selections are made from the alternatives and rules that have been created in the configuration group.
What Can You Do in this Procedure?
In this procedure you specify the selection groups and selection alternatives. You can create rules used to determine how to combine different selections.
At the top of the window you will find a heading row where you enter a configuration group for which you want to create a structure.
After this, it is possible to create different selection groups and selection alternatives that shall be available for the configuration group. This information is shown in two tables in the right portion of the window. General selection groups and selection alternatives (that can exist in several configuration groups) are registered in the Update Selection Group procedure.
In the left portion of the window, you will find a graphic structure map that shows an overall image of the different selection groups included in the configuration group as well as the selection alternatives available for each selection group. By using "drag and drop", you can move around the selection groups using the cursor, for example to make one selection group a subgroup to another selection group.
At the very bottom of the window, you can see information about who the configuration group was created by and when, as well as who the configuration group was modified by and when. You can also enter a Comment regarding the configuration group.
Please Note! You can not create a rule that includes an entire selection group.
Variables in Configuration Group
You can apply variables in the Product Configurator, which allows you to create configuration groups for custom-made products, such as doors, windows and mirrors. In order to use variables, the setting Use variables must be activated under the Product Configurator under the System tab in the Settings procedure.
If variables are applied, you can select Use variables on the heading row and create variables in a configuration group. This allows you to choose these variables in quantity formulas and formula rules which can be created on the selection alternatives for the selection groups. You can also create variables that can be selected in all configuration groups. This is done in the Variables procedure.
Revision of Configuration Group
Sometimes major changes in a configuration group are necessary, for example when existing selection alternatives are removed or new alternatives are added.
If a selection alternative is removed, it is no longer available for new configurations (e.g. for orders) but must be present for the existing configurations where it is used. You can then create a new configuration group using Save as... on the File menu and then remove the expired selection alternatives in the new configuration group. It will then become a new revision of the existing configuration group. A revision becomes a part of the configuration group number, for example in form of a suffix at the end. You can then link the affected parts to the new revision of the configuration group. This way, the existing configurations can be modified also after changes have been made in the configuration group.
However, if selection alternatives are added, you might not need to make a new revision of the configuration group. In that case there is normally no harm in having the new selection alternatives selectable also in the already existing configurations.
